Many people tried to defend land before the Normans in medieval times. But they were all trying to protect GROUPS of people.

The Iron Age people chose places that were naturally easy to defend, such as hill tops.

The Romans chose places which were good route centres, so their armies could also quickly get to trouble spots.

The Saxons chose places that were good for trade. Their burhs were never attacked.
