Cortes and the Spanish then began destroying the city. Survivors were sold into slavery, and treasures taken back to Spain. A cathedral was built on the rubble of the destroyed temple, and the city was rebuilt as Mexico City, the Spanish capital.
The Spanish imported farm animals, and grazed them on Aztec land. The Aztec were also unable to farm, so they began to starve. In this way the Aztec civilisation was lost in just a few short years.
