Aztec often fought wars just to gain captives for sacrifice. Priests took part in warfare, carrying symbols of gods into battle alongside the armies.
The lowest soldiers were porters who carried weapons and supplies. At the head of the common fighters were those who had taken captives in former battles. Only the nobles walked in front of these people. They marched according to the number of captives they had taken in previous battles. The more captives they had taken, the more spectacular their battle dress.
