Maya and Aztec used a plant with tough fleshy and fibrous leaves called maguey (which we now call the century plant or green agave) for many things food, sugar, fibres for ropes and clothing, and drink (a kind of beer).
Getting drunk before the age of 60 however was forbidden. Repeated drunkenness could be punished by death.
(Note: the modern Mexican drink called tequilla is made from a different kind of agave).
