Q1: What was the maguey plant used for?
[Answer]

Maya and Aztec used a plant with tough fleshy and fibrous leaves called maguey (which we now call the century plant or green agave) for many things – food, sugar, fibres for ropes and clothing, and drink (a kind of beer).

Getting drunk before the age of 60 however was forbidden. Repeated drunkenness could be punished by death.

(Note: the modern Mexican drink called tequilla is made from a different kind of agave).
