As Rome became more powerful, so the goods moving through the port increased. Grain was imported from Sicily and North Africa.

Handling cargoes needed lots of people. More people worked as tanners, weavers and so on.

All of these people needed food, clothes, shoes, ropes etc., so at this time many shops grew up along the main street.
