The Roman empire began to grow nearly 3,000 years ago (700 BC) and lasted for about 800 years.

During this time the Romans controlled all of the lands around the Mediterranean Sea and as far west as Britain. Their lands also stretched into the Middle East.

The empire was controlled by an emperor of whom the most famous was Julius Caesar.

The empire became weak and collapsed about 400AD.
