Temples were always found in large areas dedicated to worship. These were called sanctuaries.
Temples were often built with rows of columns around the edge.
The room inside was called the cella. It was where the offerings from pilgrims were stored. In the porch was a large statue of the god. People worshipped at an altar outside the temple.
