Q1: Why did the Greeks worship outside the temple, and not inside as we might worship in a church today?

[Answer]

The central sacred space of the temple was called the cella.

It was really an early form of strongroom, or treasury, where the gifts given to the god were stored.

In front of this treasury sat or stood an enormous statue of the god or goddess to whom the temple was dedicated.

Pilgrims brought gifts then went to a large outdoor altar and worshipped there.
