Aphrodite is the Greek goddess of love and beauty and holds great power over both mortals and immortals.
Homer tells us that the goddess is the daughter of Zeus and Dione. But Hesiod says that the name Aphrodite is derived from aphros or foam, and thus the goddess was born of the foams of the seashore waters. From the foam Aphrodite emerged.
Aphrodite was married to the god of smiths, Hephaistos. However, Aphrodite was not always faithful and had affairs with Ares, Dionysos, Adonis and Hermes. But as she was the goddess of love this is hardly surprising. Anyone foolish enough to ignore Aphrodite was punished by Aphrodite.
Aphrodite helped both human and divine lovers. This is why Aphrodite was involved with Paris and Helen of Troy.
