The ancient Greek civilisation lasted from nearly 3,000 years ago (800 BC) for about 700 years. It was a land of mountains which kept the peoples apart.

As a result they lived in small areas which were cities surrounded by farmland - city states.

These cities often fought with one another, but also had to fight off the Persians.

At the end, in about 146 BC they were defeated by the Romans.
