The ancient Greek cities did not simply defend themselves, but they captured parts of many neighbouring lands, and formed an empire of people who used the Greek language along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea as far west as Spain.
For a short while, under the leadership of Alexander the Great, the empire swelled to include Egypt and also Asia as far as northern India.
