The rituals that the priests performed were a way of communicating with the gods. Rituals centred around offerings, but there were certainly numerous other celebrations when, for example, a god might be processed from the sanctuary of the temple so that the common people could see it.

The pharaoh was the main representative of the people to the gods. If he did not take his worshipping duties seriously, everyone believed disaster would be visited on the whole country.
