As you approached the temple along the avenue of sphinxes, you would see the massive stone front of the temple. In it was a gate.
The front wall of the temple - called the pylon - was much thicker at the base than at the top so that the faces sloped. It was covered with large painted sculptures.
Great flag poles were mounted on it, and gaily coloured flags hung from them.
