In some parts of the country there were powerful tribes and kingdoms which made use of the nature of the land to build great earthworks that are now often called hillforts or castles. Some were built on hilltops, others on promentaries by the sea.
These are rings of earth ridges (which we can call ramparts) with deep ditches between. A very large flat area lies within these rings of ridges and ditches.
