As there were limited supplies of food and other essentials, the government decided that the fairest thing was to give rich and poor the same amount. They did this by rationing food and other items.
Items that were rationed, such as food and clothes, were only available by using coupons in a specially issued ration book.
Everyone took part in rationing – even the Royal Family.
