The government was worried that many children in the centers of cities might be killed by bombs.
The government organised 'Operation Pied Piper' to move, or evacuate, children from these danger zones to safer areas in the countryside.
Children were placed (billeted) with families they did not know. Sometimes this worked, sometimes children were very unhappy.
