The First World War – the 'terrible war' – was the first war to be fought all over the world.

It lasted so long because both sides were so evenly matched. But that balance changed when America was finally persuaded to enter the war in 1917.

The fighting ended at 11am on the 11th November, 1918. It is that day that we celebrate as Remembrance Day. But the First World War did not put an end to war. So we use the occasion to honour all of the brave troops who have fallen since that time, too.
