The Western Front was where the British and French met the Germans in northern France.
When they met, the two sides were evenly matched and so they dug long trenches to protect themselves.
Each line of trenches became so well fortified that it was almost impossible to gain any ground. As a result, huge numbers of men were killed 'going over the top' for no purpose whatsoever.
