Q1: What was new about this war?

[Answer]

After six weeks of training, most of the new recruits were sent to the front.

The way the war was fought was still similar to those that had been used for hundreds of years – trenches, frontal attacks and calvary charges using horses. Yet it was also the first war in which aeroplanes, tanks, poison gas, mines, submarines and machineguns were used.

What was the effect of combining old and new? A vast numbers of extra casualties.
