Q1: Why did people volunteer?

[Answer]

When the First World War started, Britain had a vast empire. People all over the empire had the same ideas about honour and duty to the empire. This was true just as much in the colonies as in Britain itself.

When Britain went to war, most people felt it was their duty to support the war. So, when the government asked for volunteers, they came forward in their millions.
