Q1: Why did Britain have a huge navy?

[Answer]

At the start of the war, Britain had a huge navy, far bigger than Germany's. That is because Britain had always needed to protect the sea routes to its colonies.

Germany had a huge army. The British army was less than a tenth the size. So if Britain was to fight Germany in Europe, it would need more men – fast.
