Countries all over the world celebrated by building things and putting on great fireworks displays.
In London there was the Millennium Bridge, which wobbled, the Millennium Dome, which cost a fortune to house a kind of festival exhibition, and the London Eye, which gave spectacular views over the centre of the city – and worked.
