On the 31st of August 1997, Diana, Princess of Wales, was killed in a car crash in Paris.
This event somehow changed the nation. Millions of people went into mourning and she was named 'the people's princess'.
Although she had not had a happy married life, she managed to give a great deal of happiness to people that she met and to seem more approachable than members of the Royal Family had been up to then. After this the whole Royal family had to become closer to the people.
