The 1970s was a more serious time than the 1960s. The Cold War continued. Hippie ideas faded away and were replaced by ideas from people more concerned with the environment.
There were many practical problems. In Britain union strikes were almost endless, made worse by an oil crisis – a time when Arab countries stopped supplying us with oil (as part of the Arab -Israeli war) and Britain almost went on to petrol rationing.
