At the end of the war, many houses in the centres of cities lay in ruins. They had been bombed to rubble.
One of the first things the government had to do was to clear these bomb sites and build new houses.
In the meantime, they built temporary homes. They were little flat-roofed bungalows and they were nicknamed 'prefabs', short for prefabricated buildings.
