Q: What was special about the 1948 Olympics?

Britain was at war for six long years. Then, just two years after the end of the war, Britain hosted the Olympic Games. It was a quite extraordinary feat, because everywhere cities lay in ruins and everyone in the country was on rations.

Even the Olympic athletes were on rations, and many foreign competitors brought their own food! This is why it became known as the ration-book Olympics.
