2. Temperatures are controlled by the overhead Sun. The Earth spins on a tilted orbit. As the Earth goes around the Sun, the tilt means that high latitudes are tilting towards the Sun for half the year, giving summer, and tilting away for the other half. (For more see Science 5E/3)
