 Dr John Snow
One of the pioneers in finding out about water-borne infections was London-based Dr John Snow.
Through his efforts at making maps of where people died when there was a cholera outbreak, he established that some diseases are water-borne and a contaminated water supply can affect many people.
As a result of his efforts, pwople began to understand that water had to be clean before it could be drunk with safety.
