You are probably not the first person to have taken an interest in where you live. You may find there are books written about it, no matter how small it is.
You should read books like this because the writer will have done a lot of background work for you. But there is nothing as good as looking at original documents such as parish records, for the way they are written tells you much about what it was like at the time.
