One of the world's first mining areas was Ironbridge in the West Midlands of England. But it only developed here because supplies of coal and iron ore could be mined from the steep valley sides.
Once the coal and iron ran out, people moved elsewhere, so modern Ironbridge does not look like the industrial centre it once was. Only the world's first iron bridge gives the game away.
