We seem to live in all kinds of different places. But they can all be placed in a small number of groups.
You may have to look back a long way in history to find out why places were founded. London, for example, was founded by the Romans 2000 years ago because it was at a good place to ford the River Thames at low tide. But that is not very obvious today!
