SOUTH AMERICAN RIVERS

The drainage pattern of South America is dominated by two river systems: the Amazon in the north and the Parana to the south. A third sizeable river, the Orinoco, drains the extreme north.

Because the main watershed of the continent, the Andes mountains, is so far to the west, rivers draining to the Pacific have short, swift and turbulent courses, whereas those to the east have long, gentle gradients.
