PECOS RIVER

The Pecos River flows from the slopes of the Sangre de Cristo mountains in north central New Mexico past Las Vegas and then directly south through plateaulands, through Roswell, Artesia and Carlsbad, before entering the Rio Grande in western Texas.

The Pecos flows through near desert country for much of its course and its tributaries are mostly from the west. Even these are ephemeral and flow only occasionally.

Erosion in desert country often produces spectacular landforms. In the case of the Pecos, it has cut a canyon in New Mexico that is 300 m (1000 feet) deep and just 10-15 m (30-50 feet) wide.
