The river first flows south east and then at Mankato it flows northeast to join the Mississippi River at Minneapolis - St. Paul.

The Minnesota River system includes the tributaries Blue Earth, Cottonwood, Redwood, Chippewa, Pomme de Terre, and Lac qui Parle.

The Minnesota River was used extensively as a route by explorers and fur traders.
