The Fraser River in the Rocky Mountains of British Columbia. The Fraser river makes a very tortuous path as it tries to escape from the Rocky mountains. First flowing north west, it cuts a deep gorge to cut westward through the Rockies and then flows south to reach the Pacific Ocean at Vancouver. Because it cuts through the Rockies, the Fraser River was used to gain access to British Columbia from the sea by gold miners, fur traders and loggers. Nevertheless, the Fraser River is almost unique among large rivers of North America in that there are no large cities along its banks. It is also one of the few fast-flowing rivers that has not been developed for Hydroelectric Power. Partly this is because the river flows in one of the world's most beautiful landscapes, and in part to protect the valuable salmon spawning grounds. ![]() |
