The Pacific islands do not have large rivers. Australia lies across the latitude of climatic deserts, and so the center and west of the continent has no reliable rivers. The Great Dividing Range collects moisture from the Pacific and provides water for all of Australia's major rivers, and in particular the Murray-Darling system. By contrast, New Zealand has a mountain backbone and a humid climate that produces numerous small but fast flowing rivers.
