Location: 27N 78E (India); length: 1400 kilometres (1100 miles); drainage basin: 717,000 square kilometres (280,000 square miles). Sometimes known as the Jumna, this is one of India's most famous rivers and a tributary of the Ganges. The Yamuna River rises in the Himalayas and flows south and southeast across northern India, past the cities of Delhi and Agra to join the Ganges near the city of Allahabad. The confluence of the two rivers is holy to Hindus.
