There's a huge amount of energy in rivers. It can be harnessed by storing it behind a dam and then releasing it through special generators called turbines.

The electricity produced is called Hydro-electric power. It's a 'green' form of energy, meaning it doesn't pollute the environment. However, it does change the way rivers naturally flow.
