What rivers carry

As rivers flow speedily along steep hilly beds, the water carries bits of rock which crash in to one another.

Tiny bits are knocked off, making sand. At the same time the rocks get more rounded and smaller.

By the time the river reaches the middle of its journey all of the rocks have been turned to sand and mud.
