Get a clear jar and use it to scoop out some of the stream bed. Include some water. Pick out any pieces larger than a sugar grain. These are stones.
Swill the material and water around in the jar and then place the jar down. The gravel will settle immediately. Sand will settle on top of this as a fine layer. What is left suspended in the water is silt and clay (or mud).
