A volcano is a special type of mountain which periodically sends out, or erupts, liquid material from deep within the Earth.
The molten rock is called lava and it often pours down the sides of the volcano during an eruption.
Sometimes the liquid comes out under great pressure and then it breaks up into tiny droplets that cool and make a powdery material called ash.
