*Remember, mountains are difficult places to live in.
* In the past people farmed the poor land and made little money. Many moved away to look for jobs elsewhere.
* Then travellers noticed how attractive the little villages were and how good the mountains were for enjoying themselves. So tourists began to arrive and the mountain regions began to prosper again. This is true in both the Alps and the Lake District.
