The Lake District is in northwestern England, close to a major motorway and not far from the large cities of Manchester and Liverpool.
It is a unique mixture of large, 'finger' lakes and rugged mountains.
You can walk to the summits of the mountains, you do not have to be a mountaineer as you would if you wanted to reach a summit in the Alps. This makes the Lake District attractive to a wider range of people.
