We probably all think we would know a mountain if we saw it. We imagine a steep-sided peak that rises sharply above the nearby land.

The world's most famous mountain is Mount Everest. It is also the world's highest, rising to 8848m above sea level.

But Scotland, Wales and England have mountains, too. None of them are like Mount Everest, so why do we call them mountains?
