People sometimes alter rivers to make floods less likely or to make rivers straighter so boats can use them or so they can have docks built along their banks.
Many rivers that were once shallow and wide have been made much narrower – the Thames in London, for example, is only a third of its natural width.
These changes can do great damage to wildlife.
