Put a layer of sand over the bottom of a large sand tray. Make the sand slope up to one side of the tray. This will be your beach.
Now sprinkle some 'hundreds and thousands' to make a line down the middle of the beach. You will be looking to see what happens to the hundreds and thousands. Photograph the 'beach'.
Pour water gently into the tray until three quarters of the beach is covered by water. Now make waves that run at and angle to the beach. Do this by moving a ruler up and down in the water. The ruler would be at an angle to the sides of the tray, not square on.
After a few 'waves' photograph the beach. Do a few more waves and photograph it again.
Look at all of the photographs. Do the hundreds and thousands show you how the sand has moved?
Why are hundreds and thousands good to use?
