Q1: What is the swash?

[Answer]

Winds push waves towards the shore in long, rolling lines. Close to the shore, where the water becomes shallow, the waves get taller, and their tops begin to break. They are now breakers.

Breakers are the main way in which sand, gravel and pebbles are moved about on a beach.

Once a wave has broken, part of the water rushes onshore in a mass of foam. This foam is called swash.
