Boise was incorporated as a city in 1863.
The first capital of the Idaho Territory was Lewiston, but after the Idaho Territory was carved up to make Montana Territory, Boise was made the territorial capital.
Boise, as capital of the territory was dependent on government jobs and services rather than mining directly, so when the gold rush was over, it did not fade away as many other places did. Many building in Main Street were built in the 1870s and have survived.
Since that time, Boise, in a fairly remote location, has struggled to find new sources of jobs. However, more recently, Boise has grown strongly. Call centers have become an important employer, while high- tech jobs have also moved in because this area is an attractive place to live.
