thinking it was empty of people. Brigham Young led the Saints west and when he reached the Salt Lake valley he is reported as having a vision by saying, “This is the place” This Is The Place Heritage Park inside the city is the spot where this happened.
Four days after arriving in the Salt Lake Valley, Brigham Young laid out the building site for the Salt Lake Temple. It took 40 years to complete. It is still at the center of the city.
The city was then laid out on a grid plan, with major streets north-south and east-west. The center of the grid is the southeast corner of Temple Square.
The streets are wide, because Brigham Young wanted them wide enough for a wagon team to turn around.
Getting through the first winter and finding ways to grow a crop were as difficult for the Mormons, as the first colonist in Virginia. They were in a land of unfamiliar climate and soils. But because they were a tightly-knit community who obeyed strict rules, including sharing out resources, they survived.
Soon after the California Gold Rush brought many prospectors on their way west, turning Salt Lake City into a trading post.
Then Congress organized the Utah Territory in 1850. Originally, Fillmore, Utah was the territorial capital, but in 1856 it was moved to Salt Lake City.
