Columbus is both the capital and largest city of the Ohio. It is the 15th largest city in the United States
The city was named for explorer Christopher Columbus and founded where the Scioto and Olentangy rivers meet.
Before Europeans arrived, this had been home to Native American people
for thousands of years. At the time of the European explorers, it was home to Miami, Delaware, Wyandot, Shawnee, and Mingo nations.
Columbus is part of historic Ohio Country, the area that was originally controlled by the French until the end
of the 18th century. The French were interested in the fur trade, either trapping for themselves, or trading with Naive Americans.
This was one of the areas west of the Appalachians that was fought over by the British and French. In the 1750s George Washington was sent to the Ohio Country by the (British) Ohio Company to survey it, and then fight for control of the territory. As France resisted this, so the French and Indian War began. However, by 1763 it was in British hands.
The Americans had never promised to keep away from the Ohio Territory, and after the American Revolution they began to prepare for the westward migration of immigrants as well as those from the old colonies. At first this was resisted by the
